9-panel exhibit
The word addiction comes from the Latin ad-dictus – “told to”, or in other words, “slave, who belongs to someone”.The term is now used to describe any behaviour pattern that we find it hard to shake off (dependence), and that threatens our health and affects family and social relationships. This can involve consuming substances (e.g. tobacco, alcohol and drugs), or sometimes destructive behaviour patterns that take over our lives (e.g. betting, video games, etc.). The social and human costs of addiction weigh increasingly heavily on society. Addiction can cause serious illness and death, destroy families and waste lives. We are beginning to fathom how dependency works in different addictions. The path back to freedom often calls for psychological and medical care. |
