Summary

Figures for 2009 indicate more than 42 million people infected with the HIV virus worldwide.
At present, there is no treatment to permanently cure the AIDS sufferer. Until a vaccine is developed, prevention is the only means of effectively curbing the spread of this global epidemic. Over the last few years, further contamination outbreaks have underlined the need for sustained public awareness.
